Comics and Cosplay at Con.ect 2016

This year’s Con.ect Geek Convention was a massive success, with an estimated 1500 people in attendance, doubling the previous year’s turnout. The event, which took place on 30 July and 31 July, saw the NMMU Indoor Sports Centre packed with fans of all things nerdy. Port Elizabeth’s only Geek Convention boasted 16 hours of gaming, shopping and cosplaying.

The two-day event included a Pokémon TCG Tournament, Xbox Racing, RBS Computer Games, a LEGO League Robot Building Competition and NMMU Racing Competitions. Those who were brave enough could attempt the LEGO Fire Walk, which consisted of walking barefoot on tons of Lego pieces. In addition, there were Wizards’ Card and Board Game tournaments and a NMMU ICT LAN Playing League of Legends and Counterstrike.

One of the most exciting features of Con.ect was the Cosplay Masquerade. Here, cosplayers were able to show off their months-long planning of character costumes. The results were amazing as many Con.ect goers were able to see their favourite characters come to life.

For those who are not clued up on gaming, there were stalls selling jewellery, comics, card and board games, books, clothing, figurines, electronic gadgets, PC games and PC components. In addition to the countless geeky accessories to choose from, Con.ect goers could also get tattoos at the Whitefox Tattoos stall.

With the incredible turnout and a variety of stalls this year, next year’s Con.ect is definitely something to look forward to!
