Padding Up Underprivileged Girls for Woman's Month
Madibaz Radio is celebrating Women’s Month this August with their #SaniTeens Campaign. The Campaign started on 3 August and will continue until 28 August. During this time, all NMMU students are encouraged to donate at least one pack of sanitary towels (pads) that will be given to underprivileged Grade 7 (13 years old) girls at Missionvale Primary School in Missionvale and Alpha Primary School in Gelvandale.
Majority of girls experience their first menstrual cycle at the age of 13, but some cannot afford to buy the sanitary towels that they need. Others are too embarrassed to speak about it with their parents, siblings or friends because, in some cultures, it is deemed taboo to discuss. Some are uneducated as to what is happening to their bodies at this stage of life.
The Campaign will aim at collecting 600 packs of sanitary towels and supplying them to 140 of these girls as well as delivering an educational lesson on 31 August to them about menstrual cycles and how to deal with it. The Madibaz ladies that will be speaking to these girls will focus on breaking the idea of menstrual cycles being a taboo, educating the girls on what is happening to their bodies at this stage of life and how to correctly handle this new experience.
The Campaign is calling on all students to drop off at least one pack of Always, Lilets or Kotex pads (no tampons or panty-liners) at the Madibaz Radio (above the ABSA bank on South Campus) or the Student Governance & Development offices on all campuses.
Let’s get behind our radio station as they celebrate the lovely ladies of South Africa by educating and equipping underprivileged girls in our city!
