Psychology Students Lend a Helping Hand this Winter
NMMU’s Psychology Society through the assistance of the NMMU community hope to donate clothes and food to pupils from Loyiso High School as well as the Care Haven Psychiatric Institution at the end of this month.
NMMU Psychology Society Chairperson Zilondiwe Goge said the society had identified 20 child headed families from Loyiso High School and Care Haven Psychiatric Institution to whom they will be donating items such as clothes and food. “In keeping with the spirit of Ubuntu which is also one of our values at NMMU, we as the Psychology Society felt a need to start this drive to support those who have little,” Goge said.
Goge said this project is a Psychology Society initiative under the Community Outreach projects of the society and that they decided to work with these entities because they do not have much support and that they would like to build a relationship with them. “We are currently doing community outreach at Care Haven and have plans to do so at Loyiso High besides the Winter Drive we are having for them,” Goge said.
This drive will continue for a month and thus far the society has not yet received many donations. “As the community outreach committee, we will come up with ideas to improve this and get members involved,” said Kayla Hearne who heads Community Outreach. She added that they are, however, looking forward to helping these entities and making a change.
“We trust that the NMMU community will help us by supporting this initiative,” Goge said.
