AND THE WINNER IS...

Port Elizabeth – NMMUs yearly Campus Life Student Concert took place on 24 March 2017, at the Indoor Sports Center, on South Campus. With 26 amazing acts ranging from dance and choir performances, to poetry recitations - the event displayed the diverse talents of students (living on and off campus).

2015 winner, Onke Ngwabeni , provided the opening act – a catchy anthem that had the audience rapping along to the chorus-hook of his ‘Get Money’ song.

The lady-lady duo, XM Poets, presented the first of six poetry acts. Their intricately woven words, spoken in IsiXhosa and English, presented a somber message.

Dan Danisa’s interpretation of the media age and his expression of love for the arts, and Zethu Mthethwa’s spoken word pieces were among those that left the crowd speechless.

However, it was Lelethu Camago Rayi who won the title of Best Poet 2017, as well as overall runner-up, for her moving poem about the traumatic reality of being a woman and the ‘disease’ that is rape. The urgency of the violations that plague women's lives were highlighted and some hope was offered for the future.

Chulumanco Godlo’s rhythm-and-blues/house composition won Most Original Act, while guitar-vocalist, Rhys Pengrams, received the award for Best Musician.

The XM residence won Best Spirit, and were also the house that had the most performers. This included the XM choir, that triumphed over five other choirs, to win the award for Best Choir.

Siphosethu Zezela’s solo won overall runner-up performance, which included a notable cover of Sam Smith’s ‘Lay Me Down’.

The winners of the Best Dance Act award, as well as overall concert winners, were the dance group Baseline. They delivered an electric performance that captivated the entire audience.

The unforgettable night of arts and culture, was hosted by MCs, Pamela Mtanga and Romeo Phekana. The performances were adjudicated by Tracy Catherine Rayepen, Earl Abrahams and Asanda S’nqobile Mchunu.
