"How to St... I'll Complete This Tomorrow"

Admit it, you are probably supposed to be doing something schoolwork-related right now – studying, completing an assignment or a practical. But instead, you’re on the Internet. Fortunately, this post provides tips on how to stop procrastinating (or at least to drop the rate at which you do it).

Procrastination is pretty much lying to yourself, convincing yourself that you have plenty of time later to do whatever it is you have to do, when in actual fact you don’t. As a result, one might end up regretting that 10-hour study break or afternoon nap. Take it from me, I’ve been there.

The question on the table is: “How do I stop procrastinating?” Well, I have a few suggestions:

  1. Break your task into segments – It is best to write down all that you have to do, break it up into smaller tasks and allocate time to each. This will make the task more manageable and less overwhelming, and you won’t feel like you are doing too much all at once. After all, that pressing feeling of being overwhelmed by your workload is the reason we procrastinate in the first place.

  2. Start with the part you enjoy the most – It could be coming up with an intriguing introduction for your boring essay or designing the cover page to your assignment. Whatever it is you enjoy the most about your project, start with that. This way, you’ll be more enthusiastic about actually getting started.

  3. Clear out the distractions – Oh man, and there are a lot of them! I find it hard to go an hour without watching a YouTube video, checking my Instagram feed or scrolling through Pinterest. You might tell yourself “I’ll be online for just five minutes”… 20 minutes later, you’re still on and show no signs of logging out. The best way to tackle this problem is to confiscate all your devices. Turn all of them off and put them on a high shelf or better yet, give them to someone else who will hold on to them while you work.

Hopefully these tips will help slay the monster that we call procrastination. Just remember, “The best way to get something done is to begin.”
