First Year Dos and Don'ts

We all plan to do great things throughout our university life, whether it be socially or academically orientated, but for most students university is not always a walk in the park and some days we might feel like throwing in the towel but always remember how lucky you are to be able to obtain any type of opportunity to be educated at a tertiary level.

Okay, enough chit chat about melodramatic issues, here are a few do’s and don’ts that will hopefully aid our first years in having the best and most successful first year of university.

The Do’s:

  • First and most importantly, attend all of your lectures. No matter how monotonous your lecturer’s tone of voice may be, be sure to attend all of your first year lectures consistently.

  • Take notes in class. Make time to scribble them down or save them on your laptop.

  • Make friends and be social! Join societies and take a break once in a while to bond with class mates and friends.

The Don’ts’s:

  • Don’t bunk your lectures, it’s not “cool” and keep in mind you are only jeopardizing your own future.

  • Don’t give up or slack off halfway through the semester, stay positive and as productive as possible.

  • Don’t hesitate to raise your hand during lectures, your lecturers are human too and want you to engage with them.

There are so many more tips to live by when it comes to university life but the above are just a few to help keep your head above the water.
